Water Smart Gardening with Richard Rowe – Footscray – Saturday 22nd October – 10:30am to 12:30pm

Water is critical to a garden’s success but it is becoming an increasingly scarce resource. Join SGA’s own Richard Rowe and learn about garden design options and choices that reduce water usage; about garden zones and characteristics of plants that love dry climates; how to improve your soil’s water holding capacity; mulch – types, how, when, pro’s and con’s; capture and storage of rain water; grey water and how to use it safely and irrigation options to help you be Water Smart.

Garden Tour and Workshop 1 – Successfully Starting from Seeds – Nunawading – Saturday 5th November – 10am to 11am

The Nunawading Community Garden is a place for the local community to grow food in a friendly environment and promote long-term sustainable living by sharing the gardeners’ knowledge and skills.

At this event you will enjoy a guided tour of the garden and attend a workshop about growing vegetables from seed. Learn about organic methods of successfully raising plants from seeds, ways to prepare soil in the seedling trays, pots and in the garden and how to transplant seedlings for success.

Garden Tour and Workshop 2 – Setting up a Community Garden – Nunawading – Saturday 5th November – 11am to 12pm

The Nunawading Community Garden is a place for the local community to grow food in a friendly environment and promote long-term sustainable living by sharing the gardeners’ knowledge and skills.

At this event you will enjoy a guided tour of the garden which commenced almost 40 years ago and attend a workshop about setting up a community garden. Learn the why and how to set up a successful community garden, what to include in a garden and how to overcome some of the challenges.

Garden Tour and Workshop 3 – Compost Making – Nunawading – Saturday 5th November – 2pm to 3pm

The Nunawading Community Garden is a place for the local community to grow food in a friendly environment and promote long-term sustainable living by sharing the gardeners’ knowledge and skills. The Garden practices organic gardening and encourages turning green waste into organic fertiliser that feeds the garden soil with nutrients and microorganisms that will improve plant growth.

At this event you will enjoy a guided tour of the garden and attend a workshop where you will learn about the different ways the gardeners make compost, how to hot compost in short timeframes and how to use compost to improve soil conditions.

Good Bugs vs. Bad Bugs with Angelica and Yuki Cameron – Collingwood – Saturday 12th Nov – 10am to 12:30pm

Are you interested in growing food in your garden, reducing chemical usage in the management of garden pests, increasing the bio-diversity within your garden or how to attract good bugs and insects into your garden to help manage garden pest, then this is the Master Class for you.

This interactive Master Class will be held at Collingwood College and include an identification walk and talk session in the original Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden. The workshop will introduce you to the world of Integrated Pest Management and how to attract predator insects to your garden to help manage garden pests.

Its a Good Bug’s Life – A Nature Workshop for Kids with Angelica and Yuki Cameron – Collingwood – Saturday 12th Nov – 1:30pm to 3pm

There is nothing more amazing than seeing the wonder of nature through the eyes of a child. This interactive children’s workshop about good bugs will be held at Collingwood College and will introduce your child to the world of good bugs in the garden and how they can help us grow healthy fresh food.

This workshop is suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years old. A Master Class for adults on gardening with good bugs will be held in the morning of the same day. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Sustainable Building Materials with Drew Barr – Templestowe Lower – Sunday 20th November – 1:00pm to 4:00pm

Simple garden structures can make the garden a more comfortable and productive space, can protect plants from the elements, can contribute to a harmonious garden design, create micro climates and help attract wildlife and beneficial creatures to our garden, but what are environmental impacts from the building materials we use?

Join Drew and learn about the environmental impacts of various building materials and be inspired about how to access and reuse old materials in your garden. Learn about the properties and typical uses of different timbers; bricks, pavers, slabs and other masonry items; earth and straw building in the garden; using sheet metal and other scrap in garden structures, sculptures and ornaments.

Building Veggie and Wicking Boxes from Pallets with Drew Barr – Templestowe Lower – Sunday 4th December – 12:30pm – 4:00pm

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make things for your garden, how to use hand tools or how to reuse wooden pallets as a building material? In this new Construction Master Class led by Drew you will learn how to use reclaimed wooden pallets to build a 1.1m square Veggie Growing Box and how to convert the box into an operating wicking box.
