Final information session – Tonight at 7pm. Expressions of interest close 5pm October 7th (tomorrow)

Regional Community Recovery Committees – for Community-led Pandemic & Storm Recovery

Have you heard about community-led recovery? Would you like to influence how $200,000 in spent in your community? You are invited to be part of an innovative and dynamic Committee which will shape community recovery.

Yarra Ranges Council is encouraging community-minded individuals to put up their hand to be a part of one of four Regional Community Recovery Committees (RCRC), to support their local communities in recovering from the social, economic and environmental impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and storm event.

We encourage anyone who is passionate, interested and wants to take part in community led recovery to nominate through the Expression of Interest process..

Why are RCRCs being set up?

Recovery from emergencies is most effective when the communities that are directly affected, lead it. People impacted by emergencies are in the best position to understand their community’s priorities for ongoing recovery.

What is a Regional Community Recovery Committee?

RCRCs will give all parts of the community a voice in the recovery process. RCRCs will be inclusive and be made up of diverse membership. The four RCRCs will each include up of 12 people who represent the demographics of their region – the Hills, Urban, Valley and Upper Yarra and will be committed to community, economic and environmental recovery.

How will RCRCs work?

Each RCRC will:

  • gather information about community strengths;
  • identify the top community recovery priorities;
  • create a Community Led Recovery Plan;
  • recommend community-led recovery projects for funding.

The final Information session will be held via Zoom on Wednesday 6 October at 7pm. Go to the Shaping Yarra Ranges page to join.

Expression of Interest close 5pm Thursday 7 October

It will be facilitated by David Younger – Clinical Psychologist, and an expert in the area of natural disasters and emergencies. David has worked with many communities and individuals throughout Victoria and Australia. He is a member of the Education Department’s Trauma Recovery Team and is on the advisory panel of Melbourne University’s Children and Disasters Group.

Albie Leckie memories: Thank you, Ms Robbie Schuurman for sharing

To the Grapevine

Thank you so much for posting a notice about the passing of Albie Leckie.  I would not have known otherwise.
I used to play tennis against Albie at your lovely little clubrooms, and was always amazed at his athleticism and guile on the tennis courts, and his wit.  He was a funny man, with a cheeky smile and always seemed to be happy. As I am a decade or two younger than Albie, I found it annoying that he was so difficult to beat.
I remember the yummy afternoon teas, with people all squished into the clubrooms, and thought it one of the friendliest tennis clubs around, and with such beautiful surroundings.
I no longer play tennis due to knees and ankles, and now play golf, but I still visit Healesville and Yarra Glen, and have very fond memories of the lovely people of Steels Creek Tennis Club, and Albie especially.

Warm regards
Ms Robbie  Schuurman
ex Healesville Tennis Club player

Newspaper Delivery – Are you interested?

Newsworthy!  The newsagent in Yarra Glen said they would consider a delivery of the weekend newspapers to our valley community.  A morning meander to the road mail box to collect your paper, to be poured over while enjoying with your morning beverage of choice!

Cost would be the cost of the papers plus a small delivery fee – Saturday Age ($4.60) plus Weekend Australian ($4.50) = about $10 in our hot little Creekian Hands.  In order for this to become a possibility, there would need to be at least 5 house holds to commit to this service.

If you are interested, please contact Erin-Marie on 0407 353 379 or erinmarieoneill@gmail.com

Community Centre – Reopening 28th July 2021!

As per government guidelines, our community centre will reopen tomorrow (28th July). You all know the routine but here is a quick reminder of the Health Department venue requirements. Mask are mandatory, both inside and outside; sign in using the QR code or manually complete the sign in sheet; maximum of 10 people inside (1 person per 4 sqm); maximum of 300 people outside (in groups no bigger than 10 people). So not quite back to full capacity, but it is a start and great to have lockdown lifted!

Steels Creek Tennis Club – Volunteers needed 5th September 2021

The tennis club has been offered a Bunnings sausage sizzle at Chirnside Park, on the 5th September 2021. In order for the club to accept, they need confirmation of volunteers to help.  There are 3 shifts planned and the club requires 4 volunteers per shift. The times are;

  • 8:30 – 11:00,
  • 11:00 – 14:00
  • 14:00 – 17:00

If you are able to sign up for one or more shift, please contact Graham Lloyd (0430 243 442) asap.  This is a great opportunity for a bit of fundraising for the club and they would really appreciate any help the community can give.

If you have any recommendations or concerns about implementing a new access system, please let us know at thegrapevine@steelscreek.vic.au. For an example of the current line of thinking, please take a look at this unit from Bunnings. We’re open to any and all suggestions though before changing anything over.

Steels Creek Grapevine – 29th July 2020 (ISO 2.0 Edition)

#steelscreek
#screekylife

Steels Creek Community Centre (NOT YET) Reopening – IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The committee is still monitoring the situation with both the Victorian State Government and the Yarra Ranges Shire Council to determine safe and appropriate use of the centre following the current lockdown order. Until we have some clarity about the conditions under which we can re-open the centre for general community use, the centre will have to remain closed.

Deadline for Articles for the Jolly Thing (July 31st)
Share your lockdown 2.0 stories and updates with us! We’re preparing the next edition of the Jolly Thing. Fear not the silly typos, grammar mistakes, relevance of your story or quality of your pics… that’s our job. We’d love to hear from you. The next edition will cover the spring months. How is lockdown 2.0? What’s on the horizon? A few words, maybe a photo. Easy. Steels Creek Community Groups and regular contributors, this is a perfect time to send us your updates too. They are they backbone of The Jolly Thing and the community. Please email your piece to: scjollything@gmail.com by July 31 2020. We look forward to hearing from you – Morgan and Sal (Editors)

Resources for Isolation Resiliance
The Yarra Ranges Shire has collected a number of resources for community members and their families to help survive – and thrive – during the pandemic lockdown. You can find out more information on the Shire’s website or information on some of the specific programs here – https://steelscreek.vic.au/community-resources-for-pandemic-isolation/

New State Government Funding for Community Initiatives
The Victorian Government is helping communities to stay connected during the coronavirus pandemic through a new grants program to support local initiatives. Applications for the “Let’s Stay Connected Fund” are now open for grants available for community organisations, local government bodies, incorporated not-for-profits and industry groups. Grants of between $5,000 and $200,000 are available to support innovative, community-based initiatives that build connection, reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation and that can be implemented quickly – providing much-needed support across the state. The $1.3 million fund could potentially help community groups continue to operate by adapting the way they deliver programs or events, including through online forums. Other possibilities include support for communities to improve their digital skills and access online communication channels, or new ways for people to continue volunteering within their communities while maintaining physical distancing requirements. Steels Creek Grapevine – 30th May 2020

#steelscreek
#screekylife

Steels Creek Community Centre Reopening – IMPORTANT INFORMATION
There are still some concerns about when to safely re-open the community centre for community use. The committee is currently monitoring the situation with both the Victorian State Government and the Yarra Ranges Shire Council. Once we have some clarity about conditions under which we can re-open the centre for general community use, we will issue an update. Though plans for re-opening were scheduled for Monday 1st June, this may not now be the case. Regardless, our use of the centre will require some operational changes to comply with both regulations and health and saftey best practices. One of the conditions will likely be recording the names and contact details of anyone who uses or visits the centre. Again, once we have some clarity about re-opening dates and full conditions of use, we will notify the community via the Grapevine, the Steels Creek Community Facebook page and the next edition of the Jolly Thing.

Steels Creek Community Centre Renovations and Maintenance
The restumping works at the community centre have been completed!! This is great news, and it was great for the works to be done whilst the centre has been in lockdown. In other good news, the centre has also been repainted internally. We have also had a gardener working at the centre to do some clearing and tidying up, ready for the centre to be re-opened. It will be a great to have the centre looking all fresh when everyone returns! Please contact myself or Keith Montell if you have any questions regarding the works at the community centre. Take care Screekians. Maree Rothwell (President SCCC), Mobile:  +61 414-278-649, Email: maree@rothwells.com.au

Surplus (Historic) Paint for Sale
While we’ve all been in lockdown, the community centre has been having a makeover. The renovations have been progessing well and are almost complete. As a result, the SCCC has surplus paint for sale at $10 per can:

  • 4 litres Interior “Barrista white” ( centre wall colour)
  • 4 litres of exterior : “Charcoal Grey”
  • 5 litres approx. Exterior “Cream”
  • 10 litres “Ceiling White”

Take a bit of history with you by buying the surplus paint of a local historic building. Please contact Keith Montell at : k.montell44@gmail.com

Deadline for Articles for the Jolly Thing (May 31st)
Share your lockdown stories and un-lockdown plans with us! The editors are preparing the next edition of the Jolly Thing.  Fear not the silly typos, grammar mistakes, relevance of your story or quality of your pics… that’s the job of our wonderfully talented editors. Submissions close May 31st. Please submit articles and/or photos to scjollything@gmail.com

Tennis Courts Open for Play
The Steels Creek Tennis Club is now open for business again, but with restrictions on the number of players who can attend. The full “Return to Tennis Policy” for the tennis club is available as a PDF download from the web site. In a nutshell; Council has not allowed the use of the club rooms and toilets yet. The courts are available for use by members and their guests, but we must know who is using them and when. Prior to use, the member must complete the Booking Form (also available from the web site) and submit it to the Secretary. For now, Lindy Montell’s Monday ladies and the Sunday afternoon socials are the only scheduled uses. We’ll be working on the Friday family nights when state of emergency restriction allow. “Senior” and “Family” members may use the courts by booking.

Tennis Club Membership Fees
Also, to encourage more use by the community, most membership fees are being reduced for the coming membership year starting 1 July 2020. Family memberships will be $90, Senior memberships will be $35, Junior memberships $20 and Social memberships still $10. The membership year runs through June 30. To play on the courts, you must be a Family, Senior, or Junior member, except for Open Days. To have a court key, you must be a Family or Senior member. Thank you for your continued support. Help keep our children safe – please drive slowly
Children are still being home schooled for now and will be on school holidays shortly. Please take care and drive more slowly in the area, as you never know when these children may be just around the next corner, or coming out a driveway.

Help keep our children safe – please drive slowly
Though we’re all in lockdown, excercise is one of the legitimate reasons to be out and about. As children are largely being home schooled now, there are a lot more out there taking a break and enjoying some physical activity on a day to day basis – and at all times of the day (and even evenings/night). Please take care and drive more slowly in the area, as you never know when these children may be just around the next corner, or coming out a driveway.

Steels Creek Community Centre Renovations
The council funded renovation work on the community centre has begun and is now in full swing – and what great timing. With no interuptions to community groups use because of the lock-down, it couldn’t have come at a better time…! Due to public health requirements, the centre will no longer be able to operate asa community hub and no public gatherings are permitted. We’ll let you know when the situation changes.

CANCELLED: Party in the Paddock (28th March)
Unfortunately, the planned party in the paddock will now not be going ahead due to the announcement made by the premier Daniel Andrews of a state lockdown. We are hoping to reschedule the event later this year if we are able to. Everyone stay safe and enjoy the time off during this time. Kind regards, Mark.

Community Support for Covid-19 Lockdown
In these very uncertain times, we are being told to bunker down and isolate ourselves as much as possible. Not everyone lives online though, so it’s important we don’t forget those around us who may need some extra assistance and more regular contact in the “real world”. We still have the ability to call friends and neighbours via that antique piece of technology installed on our smart devices – the telephone.

The idea is to capture the life and times of our current generation for reference by future generations to come. No topic is too big or too small. Our expert editoral team will masterfully help you craft a lasting written picture (or actual pictures are ok too!) that will interest and inspire for generations to come. Put the kids on a school holiday project and have them tell us all what they have been up to. Steels Creek Community Groups and regular contributors, this is a perfect time to send your updates too. These contributions are the backbone of The Jolly Thing and the community.

Christmas (Wed Dec 25th – all day….ALLLLLLLL DAYYYYYYY)
Just thought we would remind everyone, in case it hasn’t clicked yet: Christmas is just over three weeks away!! From everyone on the Steels Creek Community Centre Committee, have a “Happy Christmas!”
EDITORS NOTE: Yes, we do recognise that not everyone celebrates Christmas. We could have said “happy xmas” or just “happy holidays”. But xmas isn’t really a proper word and we know that some people don’t even get to take holidays, so what’s the point of saying that? Just be happy. No matter what day it is. Everyday. All day. Be happy.

Feedback on Preparedness for Emergencies
One of the roles of Council is to support groups that have an interest in Emergency Management. Sometimes they are a group that solely look at this, or is a bit of an offshoot of an existing group. They all look very different. For example some create plans for the whole township while others run a community forum a few times a year, and everything in between. It all depends on the community and their interests/needs. Do you have any insights, feedback or preferences for Council on how they can help communitities plan for emergencies? Contact Kelly Castelletti, Community Emergency Resilience Officer on 03 9294 6764 / 0447 554 869 or at k.castelletti@yarraranges.vic.gov.au

Cyber warning!
While we’re not here to be your technical helpdesk, it’s important to call out the significant rise in the frequency and sophistication of fraudulent emails. These will often come through (looking very official!) from your bank, Telstra, energy companies, the government and other sources. They sometimes look INCREDIBLY real! Most follow this similar format and message – “Action Required. Your access has been temporarily disabled for identity check, it can be activated once you verify the details linked with your account. This step is a part of our online-security monitoring which helps in keeping data up-to-date by updating user’s information into its latest form. Please click on the button below to enable your access.”
*** DO NOT CLICK THE BUTTON ***

If in any doubt, ignore the email and contact the company directly.

INTERRUPTION TO COMMUNITY CENTRE SERVICES (Oct 14th-31st)
We are incredibly lucky to have the old Steels Creek school house (number 2725) to be used as a community hub. The building operated as a school house from 1886 until 1992 and has survived at least two major bushfires in its illustrious life. The council maintains the structure of the building with the Steels Creek community centre committee members and volunteers maintaining much of the internals, the facilities, and the surrounding grounds. The building is being restumped during October to help protect this valuable comunity asset.  Access to center will be through the new extension only. There will be no access to the old school house throughout the project, including the kitchen. Please take this into account for all upcoming community events throughout the latter part of October. If you’re interested in finding out more about the history of the school house, there is some information in a booklet at the centre or you can contact the Yarra Glen and District Historical Society.

Steels Creek Grapevine – 26th July 2019 [CORRECTION]

#steelscreek #screekylife

CORRECTION: Steels Creek “Jolly Thing” – Deadline for Submissions (27th July)
Apologies for the mistake with this article in the most recent Grapevine. This should have referred to the deadline for the “Jolly Thing”, not “Grapevine”. Hence the inclusion of the notice below of the handover to a new editor… 🙂

I know it’s a [very] late [now] reminder – but sometimes your best work is produced under pressure, right? [clearly this is not the case, given the above!] The deadline for submissions to the next edition of the Jolly Thing is this Saturday 27th July. Put your brain into panic mode and just get it done. You’ll be amazed how your creative side is just bursting to get out and express itself. Or maybe it’s just a short and sweet observation of daily life in the valley. Whatever. Any content – no matter how small or inconsequential for you, will provide historical insights well into the future. Submit your materials (including photos, artworks etc) to scjollything@gmail.com.

Steels Creek Tennis Club Christmas in July (Sat 27th July, 6pm)
WHERE: Steels Creek Community Centre
COST: $25 per person for Xmas dinner – with all the trimmings and plum pudding dessert. Option for Primary School Aged Children: $12 per child for nuggets and chips, ice cream and topping for dessert
RESERVATIONS :  Mark Newell : Ph 0411 111 839 or STTC@yarraglen.com

Steels Creek Tennis Club Family Night (Friday, 20th August, 6pm)

S4Reel Movie Night (Fri, 21st June from 6pm – Movie starts 7:30pm)
Screening on Friday June 21: Passport to Pimlico (1949). The accidental explosion of an undetonated German bomb left over from World War II unearths a long-buried cellar containing both fabulous riches and a previously unknown royal charter from King Edward IV that cedes the surrounding land to the last Duke of Burgundy. Since the charter has never been rescinded, the London district of Pimlico is now legally the
long-lost Duchy of Burgundy, and therefore no longer subject to British law. Starring Stanley Holloway and Margaret Rutherford in this classic comedy. Cost is $10 per person plus $4 for the Centre. For those able to provide food it’s just $4 donation for the
Centre. Please let me know if you are able to supply a main course, salad or dessert.

EVENT: An Ecologists view on Permaculture and Landcare (Sun 14th April, 11:30am)
Your Piece in the Puzzle. Often, we approach land management and permaculture from a viewpoint within our fences and from our hopes and aspirations. From this viewpoint, we then consider the role of nature only as far as it affects our ability to achieve our vision. In this engaging chat, we will consider things from a different perspective: we will
look at our land as a single piece in a huge puzzle that is full of complex, fascinating
and dynamic interactions. Together we will explore how shifting our perspective to
look at our land as a piece in a puzzle will help us better care for our environment
Ask not what nature can do for you but what you can do for nature. How can we be
‘ outrospective’?  Dr Melanie Ylctgbngu is a passionate ecologist who has been walking in the bush since she graduated from crawling. Nature is not an optional extra, it a life support system, and Melanie finds joy in sharing the lessons that nature has to teach us, to help us be better organisms in this shared world. As a conservationist, ecologist and
permie she brings a holistic view to inspire us to think differently.

Date: Sunday 14th April
Time: 11.30 am Bring md for a shared lunch. Coffee and tea provided.
Talk: 1:00 pm
Finish: 3.00 pm
Location: Brockspur Eco Farm, 57 Harvey Road, Steels Creek

They have no money; passports; or any idea where America is but with luck and a donkey called Michael Jackson!
Sounds weird but it is a very enjoyable film and the acting of the two young boys is amazing. This is one you will talk about.

Cost is $10 per person including $4 for the Centre. For those able to provide food it’s just $3 donation for the Centre. Please let me know if you are able to supply a main course, salad or dessert. (Lindy – 5965 2202)
