Get rid of your old unwanted’s and let someone else benefit from your loss (offer does not apply to the trading of children – though livestock and pets may be acceptable). A car boot sale is in the plan for later in the year. Keep your eyes out for that one if you’re thinking of buying a pair of boots for your car.

Want a more timely way to find out what’s happening in Steels Creek?
We now have an SMS based notification service for the Grapevine. This can be used for reminders (like having some forewarning of when the next market is on), new event notifications, cancelled events and some more general communications. Note that this service is only intended to be an adhoc notification service and doesn’t replace the current Grapevine email based service. In fact, the two go very nicely together. It is simply a value added feature designed to help keep people in touch, especially those who don’t rely as heavily on email or the Steels Creek community website.

If you’re interested in joining the list, please provide your name and mobile phone number(s) in an email to thegrapevine@steelscreek.vic.au

https://steelscreek.vic.au/s4reel-film-club-april-may-2017/
Join comic genius Billy Crystal and Jack Palance in this hilarious film about cowboys, careers, and mid-life crisis. A story that follows the lives of three pals who looking for a fantasy adventure end up with scorching heat; sore backsides; and an insight into life. A movie you can get right into – right up to your armpits (an in-joke if you haven’t seen the movie…)

Cost is $10 per person including $2 for the Centre.  For those able to provide food it’s just $2 donation for the Centre.  Please let Lindy Montell know if you are able to supply a main course, salad or dessert. (Lindy – 5965 2202)

SCCC Working Bee – 9am-10am Saturday 13th May (before the market)
The centre needs just a little more care and attention to get it through the critical winter months. Any gardening tools that will help make the job a little easier would be appreciated. If you’re coming along to the Saturday market, come a little earlier and lend a hand. If you’re not coming to the market….lend the other hand. Thanks to all that participated in the last working bee! What a great effort and a brilliant result.

Don’t forget the Jolly Thing now has classified ads – as does the website – https://steelscreek.vic.au/noticeboard/trading-post/

SCCC Committee members wanted
If you have about four or so hours available in a year, why not join the Steels Creek Community Centre Committee? It doesn’t take much time and any efforts will be rewarded in spades by the entire Steels Creek community. The centre always needs more committee members. Help keep the centre in top nick and of continued value and use to the community. Reply to the grapevine if you’re interested!

Steels Creek Grapevine – 24th Mar 2017

Steels Creek Community Centre Working Bee. TOMORROW 25th March, 9am
The community centre needs a little TLC, so we have planned a working bee. The weeds are many and the grass is long, so we need some helpers to come along. Bring some tools or weed spray if you have it. Would be nice if this could become a regular habit. Without having someone dedicated to the task, the committee feels it’s only right to ask, that you spend a short time before the next market event, to clean up the grounds with some effort well-spent. So 9am is the time we have planned, THIS Saturday ** 25th ** – can you make it? Yes?! GRAND!! We all thank you for keeping the centre so nice, but if no-one shows up then we’ll all pay the price – of a gardener who’s paid to come up…from the city? Now *that* would be a waste, a crime, and a pity. So do lend a hand (and the rest of you too!) to make the grounds look beautiful – almost like new. And if you really can’t spare some available time, I will pledge to continue to roll out this rhyme. Infinitum it could go: on and on…and forever. Your only saviour/hope/excuse at this point is… bad weather.
(See, I told you I would continue to roll out this rhyme….)

REMINDER: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS ENDS SUNDAY 2nd April, 3am
Daylight savings this year concludes on Sunday 2 April 2017. Don’t forget to put your clocks *** backwards *** one hour at 3am (if you’re awake at that time. Otherwise, you can have a sleep in knowing you’ll get in an extra hour and then put the clocks back!)

Steels Creek Tennis Club – Bunnings Sausage Sizzle – Sunday Mar 26th
The Steels Creek Tennis Club has an upcoming Bunnings Sausage sizzle, next Sunday March 26th. Unfortunately Alby and Gwen are not available to run it as usual, so Mark Newell has kindly put up his hand to run the day. However, Mark is going to need assistance on the day. If you can possibly spare an hour or two, it would be greatly appreciated. Please call Mark on 0411 111 839 to let him know if you can make it on the day.

Steels Creek Tennis Club – Pizza Night – Saturday 1st April from 5pm
Come and enjoy great wood fired pizza, live music and sit around the fire with family and friends. Cost is Families $55, Couples $35, Singles $20. BYO Drinks and chairs. There will be soft drinks and chocolates for sale on the night. Please RSVP Mark on 0411 111 839 by Monday the 27th of March, so we can plan numbers for the night.

REMINDER: FIRE SEASON HAS OFFICIALLY ENDED
You may have seen in a previous communication, fire season officially ends 1st May “unless otherwise notified”. Here’s some updated information from the Dixon’s Creek CFA: “I wish to advise that Chief Officer Warrington has approved the termination of the FDP in District 13 for Monday 20th of March 2017. Council Bylaws will be in force from this date onwards. Public notifications will be advertised in local newspapers shortly. Regards David Renkin, Operations Manager – Officer in Charge, CFA – District 13 – North East Region. T: 03 8739 1300 M: 0400 905 485 F: 03 8739 1382 E: d.renkin@cfa.vic.gov.au

FIRST AID COURSES?
We’ve had an inquiry about running some first aid courses. These were run at the community centre a few years ago. Our understanding is that these were funded by VBAF and we currently have no other funding sources to tap into, other than the community development grants (that we distributed information on via the grapevine a couple of weeks ago). Are you able to run some first aid training perhaps? We will look into alternative ways we might be able to fund some ongoing training if enough people are interested but if you are able (qualified) and willing to run these events for others in the community, please do let us know (no harm in asking, right?).

WHAT’S ON?
Please do take a look at the online events calendar and let us know if there’s anything you would like to add or correct. Help us to ensure that everyone knows all the great things that members of our various community groups are doing.

It is with deep sadness that we must report a recent break-in at the community centre. The shed was broken into and a number of items stolen. The police have been informed. YARRA GLEN ARTS SHOW 2017
Founded by six local artist’s friends and operating since 2002, the Yarra Glen Art Show, now rebranded the Yarra Glen Arts Show is a major community bi-annual art event for the Yarra Valley.

Our 2017 show is scheduled for 11-13 March 2107 and our new Artist Awards are attractive and will address the diverse range of mediums we accept in the show including painting, photography, sculpture, textiles and metal works, capturing styles from realist to impressionist and contemporary abstract to traditional landscape.

We have also designed a number of new activities such as a local schools’ activity, and an activity designed to encourage visitors to participate in the creation of an actual art work during the three-day event. We hope that these new activities will be fun, create a sense of belonging, and enrich the experience of all visitors to the show.

Steels Creek Grapevine – 3rd Jan….2017!

Grapevine-header

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome to 2017 in Steels Creek!

We hope everyone had some enjoyable new years celebrations and are looking forward to a rewarding and fulfilling 2017.

A Message From Sandra Turnley:
“Just wanted to say a big thank you for organising the chainsaw course I did at the SCCC a couple of years back. I thought it would be useful but not until now has it really made a difference.  I have [sic] able to help with the cleanup on our property, caused by recent strong winds bringing down 13 (and counting) trees. My trusty little chainsaw has performed well.  The skills training and experienced advice has given me confidence to help cut up the tree branches etc – the big stuff was left to Ray and his big chainsaw. I am sure many people who attended the classes will be feeling the same thoughts.” – Sandra

The courses run by various special interest groups in Steels Creek have indeed proved extremely valuable to the community overall. If you have ideas for short courses or information sessions that you feel would be of value to others, the Shire has the ability to provide funding. Contact the Shire for more information and don’t forget that you should also contact them if you’re still having trouble cleaning up from October’s significant wind events.

An Old Shed Finds a New Home
Henry Verhoeven reports that his recent Grapevine request to find a new home for his old shed was very successful. A new owner has now been found and the shed has been relocated to its new surrounds.

If you have anything you want to get rid of – or anything you’d like to acquire, or even perhaps to simply borrow from someone – you can send a request to the Grapevine and/or self publish via the Trading Post section under the Noticeboard menu of the Steels Creek Website https://steelscreek.vic.au/noticeboard/trading-post/

CANCELLED: Steels Creek “Carols Christmas” Event 2016 – Sunday 18th Dec
https://steelscreek.vic.au/carols-christmas-event-2016-sunday-18th-dec/
As if you really needed another Christmas event to go to anyway, right? Anyway, watch out for more community events coming in the new year.

WORKING BEE – Steels Creek Community Centre – SATURDAY 10th Dec (9:00am)
Just for an hour before the market this Saturday morning. Turn up around 9:00am and enjoy some rewarding weeding and/or whipper snipping. It’s always more enjoyable when you’re doing it for someone else. BYO tools, smiles…and muscle relaxants.

Are YOU the anonymous grass cutter??
Fiona and John put an ad into the grapevine a little while back and had “a nice young man” respond to the ad. He came and mowed once but didn’t leave a contact number and has not been in contact with them since. They are a bit worried about getting the grass mown after all this recent sun and rain. Could you please respond if you are “the one”? They are at 701 Steels Creek Road. The land is under 1 acre and gently sloping. Their contact number is 0432 025 041 – Good luck finding your man Fiona and John!

Free Shed – STILL AVAILABLE
3.4 metre x 6.2 metre shed (one long side 2/3 open) free to a good home. Only requirement is that new owner is to remove it from existing paddock site in Steels Creek. Easily dismountable.
Older style steel framed construction with timber purlins, galvanised iron sides & roof, small window, guttering and downpipes. In good condition.
Interested parties should contact Henry Verhoeven on 0409 140 775.

Steels Creek Landcare Bunnings Sausage Sizzle – Friday 16th Dec

Want a more timely way to find out what’s happening in Steels Creek?
There’s been some suggestions about creating an SMS based notification service for the Grapevine. This might be used for reminders (like having some forewarning of when the next market is on), new event notifications, and some more general communications (like if a class at the community centre is cancelled at the last minute). It wouldn’t replace the current Grapevine service. It would just be a value added feature, in conjunction with the current email notification service and the Steels Creek Community website. If you’re interested in at least trying it out, please let me know and provide your mobile number(s) at thegrapevine@steelscreek.vic.au

Can you slash, mow or have something with a voracious green appetite?
New Screekians Fiona and John Martin are looking for some help to maintain their property. They are at 701 Steels Creek Road.  The block is one acre and fenced on three sides. It is not currently fenced across the frontage on Steels Creek Road.  Anyone is welcome to stop by of an evening or weekend and have a look and a chat. They would like to find a local solution to have their grass mown, or eaten.  Is there someone local who can help them perhaps? They can be contacted on 0409 132 669 or 5965 2384.

Remember, there is always good information available on the risks and prevention of bushfires that is available from a variety of sources. We’ve collected a few of the more common ones on the safety section of the web site. If you come across any others, please do let us know.

GRAPEVINE UPDATE:
Many people have raised the issue of timing for notices in the Grapevine. In some cases, only a few days notice has able to be provided. Earlier in the year we asked people whether they wanted to be notified immediately (i.e., as each message came in) or through a regular “digest” format like this.

Well, the good news is that we can now do both. You can choose to receive immediate notices (as soon as they are published on the web site) – as well as the regular digest format like this. Immediate notifications can also be broken down by topic area. For example, if you were only interested in the movie night news, you can subscribe to only the movie night info. If you only want to know about the garden club, you can just receive notices about the garden club. You can create any combination of topics you like (from the available list below). However, when you receive the digest format, it will still contain all of the articles, not just the topics you’ve subscribed to.

Makes sense? Yes? Then simply reply to this email with the topics you’re interested in from the list below.
Makes sense? No? Then just forget that you read this and we’ll keep sending you the digest format anyway.

Here’s the topic list:

  • Steels Creek Surrounds
  • Art Group
  • Book Club
  • Business Notices
  • Clamberers
  • Film Club
  • Garden Club
  • Land Care
  • Pinboard (general notices)
  • Stitchers
  • Tennis Club
  • Uncategorized
  • Yoga

If you think of other topics we need to include, just let us know!

SCCC Update:
A quick reminder that the Steels Creek Community Centre is available for public or private use and can be booked using the online form or by contacting Christine Tomlins at 5965 2080.

If you have any complaints or suggestions about the centre and its facilities, please remember to contact the community centre committee rather than the council directly. The committee can usually deal with most problems in a very timely fashion and we do need to keep track of work requests or other problems that might occur at the centre. If you have any urgent needs at the centre (i.e, can’t get in, no power, no water, no toilet paper[..!], unable to use audio visual equipment etc) please contact John Brand on 0424584820 or Keith Montell.

The centre needs some work done to repair the peeling paint work on the ceiling in the old part of the building. We previously had this done by a professional who charged us nearly $1,000. If you can and are willing to help restore this paintwork, please let us know at steelscreekcommunitycentreinc@gmail.com

If you haven’t seen the fantastic landscaping work that the students at Billanook College have done yet, check it out. A VERY big thank you to all those involved!

Finally, it appears some of the larger folding tables from the centre have gone missing. If you know anything about their disappearance or are holding them hostage somewhere, please let us know!
