Steels Creek becomes even more of a part of Victoria’s Heritage

The State Library of Victoria (in partnership with the National Library of Australia) aims to build a comprehensive collection of Australian publications to ensure that Australians have access to their documentary heritage now and in the future. The Library has traditionally collected items in print, but it is also committed to preserving electronic publications of lasting cultural value.

“Publications” refers not only to traditional hardcopy documents that may be available via a website but also the website itself. The Steels Creek Community website is now being archived as one such collection by the State Library of Victoria.

PANDORA, Australia’s Web Archive, was set up by the Library in 1996 to enable the archiving and provision of long-term access to online Australian publications. Since then, the SLV have been identifying online publications and archiving those that they consider to have national significance. Additional information about PANDORA can be found here and on the Library’s server at: http://pandora.nla.gov.au/index.html

The Steels Creek Community Centre Committee (who operates the web site and is responsible for publishing various newsletters) has granted SLV a licence under the Copyright Act 1968, to copy the website and any attached publication into the Archive – and to provide public online access to it via the Web. This means that we have granted the Library permission to retain a record of our website (and copies of the Jolly Thing) in the Archive. It will provide public access to all of these materials in perpetuity. We trust that this does not affect what is published in these documents, simply because they will be archived by the National Library.

There are some benefits to the community in having our publications archived by the Library. For example, under the copyright licence, the Library will take the necessary preservation action to keep our information accessible as hardware and software changes over time. The Library will catalogue our publication and add the record to the National Bibliographic Database (a database of catalogue records shared by over 1,100 Australian libraries), as well as to the SLV online catalogue. This will increase awareness of our publications among researchers using libraries.

This information will be re-archived periodically to keep up to date with additions and changes.
