Steels Creek Grapevine – 26th Feb 2019

HURRY! Final submission date for content for the commemorative edition of the Jolly Thing (27th Jan)
Don’t forget to put pen to paper, fingers to keyboards, voices to voice recognition software…or whatever other method you choose…to contribute something to the next special commemorative edition of the Jolly Thing. The upcoming edition will feature content related to the 10 year anniversary of Black Saturday. It’s well known that “milestone” events like these may evoke many mixed emotions. The process of writing and recounting events can be both traumatic – and therapeutic. Whatever your memories of, or before the fires, whatever your outlook and experiences have been since, or maybe it’s just your pride of being a ‘Screekian’ – all are worth capturing in the history of Steels Creek, via the Jolly Thing. For those that don’t yet know, the Jolly Thing (and the entire Steels Creek website at steelscreek.vic.au) are being archived in the State Archives for future generations. This is a chance to share some memories, feelings, observations, thoughts…even some hints and tips…not just to those in the community now, but well into the future.

We’d also encourage children (and young adults!) to contribute as well. This might be through artwork, stories, tributes – anything at all.

Steels Creek Tennis Club Open Day (27th Jan, 12:00pm)
We will have an Open Day, with BBQ lunch at midday, open tennis with prizes and give-aways for the kids, as well as a good social time for all. Sunday, 27 January is the date. Come down for a social hit of tennis and a free BBQ, BYO drinks – please let us know if you are coming for catering purposes.

Steels Creek Grapevine – 15th Nov 2018

S4Reel Movie Night (16th Nov, 6:00pm)
Dinner from 6pm – Film Starts 7:30pm. We look forward to you joining us for guaranteed laughs; suspense; and drama together with fine food; good company and a movie in our Gold Class venue. This last film of the year is a comedy and who knows the catering may be inspired but I will hire a bodyguard! Screening on Friday 16th November: “Who is Killing the Great Chefs Of Europe” (1989). Mystery abounds when it is discovered that, one by one, the greatest Chefs in Europe are being killed. The intriguing part of the murders is that each chef is killed in the same manner that their own special dish is prepared in. Food critics and the (many) self-proclaimed greatest Chefs in Europe demand the mystery be solved. Starring in this black comedy are George Segal; Jacqueline Bisset; and the marvellous Robert Morley. Cost is $10 per person plus $4 for the Centre. For those able to provide food it’s just $4 donation for the Centre. Please RSVP for catering purposes and please also let me know if you are able to supply a main course, salad or dessert. (Lindy – 5965 2202).

Black Saturday – 10 Year Anniversary Memorial Funding
The Steels Creek Community Centre Committee has recently been notified of an approved grant for funding to be used for commemorative activities for the 10-year anniversary of Black Saturday. The grant is for $5000 and will be used for a variety of activities including a wellness information session, a commemorative and history themed market day, a commemorative edition of the Jolly Thing (which will be included in the State archives), a new commemorative visitors book, and catering for several events – including two social woodfired pizza nights. There are obviously still very mixed feelings in the community about the 10 year anniversary, so the grant application tried to take all community feedback into consideration. Many thanks to everyone who contributed and responded to the earlier call-out for ideas. A particularly generous and heart-felt thank you to the president of the Steels Creek Community Centre committee, Maree Rothwell, for driving this project and helping us to secure the funding.

The Steels Creek Family Social Night is on this Friday the 26th of October at the Steels Creek Tennis Club with coaching for the kids and BBQ tea from 5:30. BYO drinks.
Have the kids dress up in their favourite Halloween outfit for prizes and games! Enjoy a rally and a snag with a few zombies, vampires, witches and goblins (Note: exorcisms should only be performed in the privacy of your own home…after the event).

REMINDER: SCCC Working Bee (Sat Oct 27th, 9am)
The 2018 Annual Flower Show is coming up (Sat 3rd Nov) and we need the community centre grounds in tip-top shape in preparation. Can you spare 30-60 minutes before the market on Saturday 27th Oct at 9am? Tasks involve weeding, pruning, brush cutting, re-oiling the picnic tables, and a general tidy up. Bring your own tools if it makes it easier – whipper snippers, weeding wands (i.e., the removal ones, not the poisoning types), gardening gloves (with hands inside preferably) and any other useful garden maintenance implements – all welcome!

Steels Creek Community Centre Market (Sat Oct 27th, 10am)
Come to the community centre with your lovely spring produce and trade with locals. Bring some friends and share some morning tea, some local stories, and have a quick/efficient natter with worthy conversationalists. Keep up to date with the local goings on – and avoid the awkward “I didn’t know that…” type conversations in the ‘Glen.

Black Saturday – 10 Year Anniversary Memorial
It’s coming up to 10 years since the devestating 2009 bushfires that affected so many of us S’Creekians. There’s many memorial activities planned around Victoria but, as a small community that was significantly impacted, Steels Creek has an opportunity to remember lives and properties lost, and to pay its respects to all involved in this tragic event, in the way it best sees fit. There are suggestions for some low key get togethers – on Thursday Feb 7th: a reflective walk to the memorial seat on old Kinglake road. Just a simple meet and walk together, weather conditions permitting. On the following market day (Saturday 9th) just a casual get-together with everyone bringing a plate of food – and some reflections and memories to share. The community has changed over the past 10 years with many new residents and others sadly moving on. Have your say about about what’s important for you – and your community – by emailing thegrapevine@steelscreek.vic.au and/or visit www.vic.gov.au/2009-bushfires.

Steels Creek Grapevine – 26th September 2018

Increase in Steels Creek Community Centre Usage Fees
The Steels Creek Community Centre Committee recently held its AGM. One of the agenda items was to review the $3 per-person usage fee. As the centre receives no general funding from either the council or the state government, it relies entirely on all users paying a small fee to cover the (ever-increasing) operating costs. These are typically power, cleaning, and various consumables (use your imagination). The Committee agreed to increase the per-person, per-visit usage fee to $4 for all community events and casual hire to $60 for local groups (eg tennis club). The rationale? The Community Centre has been running at a loss for several years, so the committee decided to absorb the cost rises and use saved funds. However, we also need to keep a buffer on funds in the bank for any unforeseen expenses. It was agreed by the Committee to aim for a balanced budget. We know that any increase of cost is never easy for anybody. However, the Committee continues to pursue other funding options as well that will limit any future usage price rises.

Steels Creek Grapevine – 16th August 2018

This next film is our “Annual Romance” and will warm your heart in the coldest month!

SCLG membership renewal was due by the 30th June 2018. Payment is still only $20 per household. Direct deposit to Steels creek Landcare Group – Bendigo Bank BSB 633-000 Account no 124 262 114. Please include your name as a reference

Note that membership allows you to access loan equipment. However, if your membership lapses, there is a month delay before equipment can be borrowed to ensure that your membership is paid to Victorian Landcare Association and is current.

Steels Creek Landcare – Volunteer Student Program
Do you need any help around your property? Volunteers are again available to assist landowners to undertake a range of tasks. Activities, which you might describe as “high volume low complexity”, have previously included tree planting, firewood stacking, fence removal, property tidy up, weed control plus a whole lot more. The current volunteers groups are made up of 8 to 10 students with 1 to 3 supervisors.
Basic tools, gloves and high visibility vests are supplied. Depending on the task/s to be undertaken, you may also need to organise appropriate tools yourself, e.g .wheelbarrows, shovels etc. We do ask that you also provide some light refreshment for the students if possible.
I would really like to build up a list of Steels Creek Landcare Members who are willing to have the volunteer students work on their property so that we can assist as many people as we can.
Billanook are coming out the week of September 17th and the week of November 19th.
Fairhills have just been out and are yet to confirm further visits.

SC4Reel Film Night (Fri 13th July, “The Lady in the Van”- 2015)
Based on the true story of Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins, who parks her van ‘temporarily in Alan Bennett’s driveway and proceeds to live there for 15 years. What began as a begrudged favour develops into a life changing relationship. Maggie Smith is brilliant in this as Miss Shepherd and well supported by Alex Jennings as Alan. A very entertaining, warm and funny film.

Cost is $10 per person plus $3 for the Centre. For those able to provide food it’s
just $3 donation for the Centre. Please RSVP for catering purposes and please
also let me know if you are able to supply a main course, salad or dessert. (Lindy –

(Lindy –

Submissions for the Jolly Thing
A reminder that you can submit your own articles to the Jolly Thing. You can provide anything of news, general information, entertainment…anything at all! And it will be preserved for long term prosperity. The Jolly Thing is one of a select group of community publications that is being archived by the State Library of Victoria. If you have kids, please encourage them to contribute their own stories and/or artworks about what life is like in the valley in 2018. Their kids-kids might just enjoy it! If you’re part of one of the local special interest groups, don’t forget to regularly publish items about your activities too. This helps help bring awareness to the broader community about what’s going on in the Steels Creek valley – and there’s lots!
Email scjollything@gmail.com or post an article directly online. If you haven’t yet received your copy of the Jolly Thing, you can subscribe to receive the bi-monthly electronic version at https://steelscreek.vic.au/publications/local-publications/
Or, if you prefer paper, copies are still available at several local businesses in Yarra Glen. Thanks especially to Hoogies for continuing to support the hard copy publication of the Jolly Thing.

Help our new residents get better acquainted with the Steels Creek Community
We have had some new residents move into the area in recent times. At this time of year in particular, it’s worth letting them know about the Grapevine, the Jolly Thing, the community centre, and the various community groups that operate in the valley. If you have new neighbours, point them to the website (www.steelscreek.vic.au), have them sign up to the Grapevine to ensure they receive locally relevant information – and most of all, ensure they’re on one of the fireguard group fire tree lists.
